Carteia, located just minutes from Sotogrande in San Roque, was once a vibrant Roman colony and harbor town of strategic importance during the Roman Empire.
Baelo Claudia, near Bolonia Beach, is an exceptionally well-preserved Roman seaside town. Here, the first production of garum (a prized Roman fish sauce) flourished, supporting a thriving economy. Wander through the remains of its forum, temples, aqueducts, and theater, with stunning views of the coast as your backdrop.
Gastronomic Heritage
Every May for the last 2000 years, Tuna Trap ‘Almadraba’ fishing returns to the Coast of Cadiz. The first tuna fish approach the coastline in May, on their way to the Mediterranean Sea to lay their eggs. A real delicacy caught by local fishermen, that preserve the ‘Almadraba’ tuna traps, ensuring sustainability of the species. All in all, ‘Almadraba’ is a traditional and spectacular fishing art. Man against tuna. A fight in which the fastest and most agile wins.
Tuna is available in restaurants & bars all year round, but May takes the spotlight with several gastronomic festivals, routes and events.
